A FIELD GUIDE TO BRITAIN’S STRANGE & WONDERFUL DAYS OUT 145 EVENTS · ENGLAND · SCOTLAND · WALES · NORTHERN IRELAND

Unusual UK events in November.

November has plenty of fire, but it isn't one long, interchangeable Bonfire Night. Lewes, Battle, Rye and Edenbridge each have their own societies, processions and arrangements. Ottery St Mary’s barrels and Hatherleigh’s pulled barrels are different customs again. Choose the event you want to get to know, then read its guide for viewing, participation and access. A familiar-looking torchlit photo won't tell you where you can stand or whether a particular fire site needs a ticket.

Bridgwater adds an illuminated carnival procession and the separate spectacle of squibbing, and it can reward a longer visit taking in the daytime programme as well as the evening carts. Shebbear offers a more compact kind of oddness, with the turning of the Devil’s Stone at the heart of its custom. Think about whether your group wants a big moving display, a town's wider celebration or a short village occasion. Bigger and louder aren't the only ways to make a November evening memorable.

The pace changes in mid-Wales, where the Real Ale Wobble takes mountain bikes onto marked routes around Llanwrtyd Wells. Entering a ride and watching a procession need quite different preparation. Use the organiser's current information on registration and kit, rather than assuming the beer in the name tells you everything about the day. A companion along for support can spend some time enjoying the host town, rather than expecting a continuous roadside show to follow.

Confirm the next date and how you'll get home before settling the rest of the plan. Road closures, controlled viewing areas and changing programmes can all affect how an evening works, and a rough start time is no promise of when the finale will finish. If a particular facility or access arrangement matters to you, ask the organisers directly. Then pick the parts you can enjoy comfortably and support the people putting them on. November's customs are worth seeing as whole community occasions, not just the moment something catches fire.
