What to expect
Riders set off from Llanwrtyd Wells at around 10am on waymarked, marshalled routes through the hills and forests: a long route of about 28 miles and a shorter route of about 15 miles. It is not a race, but expect mud, climbs and plenty of puddles. There is a checkpoint on the way, with refreshments including non-alcoholic beer. At the end, riders swap their beer tokens for locally brewed real ale, and back in town the Mid Wales Beer Festival is in full swing. The routes use forest tracks and open hill, and the November weather can turn wet and windy quickly, which is part of the fun.
The story behind it
Llanwrtyd Wells, which likes to call itself the smallest town in Britain, became famous for wacky events when local people started dreaming up ways to bring visitors in. The Man versus Horse marathon came first, then the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. The Real Ale Wobble, organised by the local Green Events team, combines two of the area's great assets, its hills and its beer, and it has become a fixture of the November calendar. Its walking cousin, the Real Ale Ramble, follows a week later.
Getting there and home
Llanwrtyd station, on the scenic Heart of Wales line between Shrewsbury and Swansea, is a short walk from the town square, but trains are infrequent, so check times carefully, especially if you plan to bring a bike. By road, Llanwrtyd Wells is on the A483 between Builth Wells and Llandovery. Parking is available in the town, but it gets busy during the beer festival weekend. Accommodation in the town is limited and fills up during the beer festival, so book early or look at Builth Wells and Llandovery.
Watching, taking part and tips
The Wobble is for riders aged 16 and over, and entry costs £25 per route; book online, as places can fill up. There is no mobile signal on the route and no card payment, so bring cash for the barbecue and hot drinks. Bring a bike in good condition, waterproofs and spare layers. There is little to watch, so non-riders are better off at the beer festival. If you prefer two feet to two wheels, the Real Ale Ramble walks run the following weekend.
Taking part
Bromsgrove Hall is your first port of call. The organisers' 2026 page gives its postcode as LD5 4RA, with morning check-in from 8am to 9.30am and a mass start at 10am after a short briefing. Check-in is compulsory, because that's where riders pick up their number board and beer tokens. Booking online and turning up at the start isn't enough on its own.
The official page says booking in advance is essential, online entry closes three days before the event, and numbers are capped at 500. The entry link sets out the conditions for your own booking. There's only a little parking at the hall, with other car parks around town, so leave time to park up and walk to registration. If you're bringing several bikes, sort out who's collecting what before you join the check-in queue, rather than finishing your preparations during the briefing.
Eating and drinking
The finish line isn't the end of the refreshments. Green Events says riders coming back into town can use their beer tokens again at Bromsgrove Hall while their bikes are washed, and there are snacks, hot drinks and Wobble merchandise there too. That makes the hall a handy reunion point if your group doesn't ride round together, as long as everyone follows the day's instructions about where riders should go.
Think of the refreshments on the route and the evening festival as two separate parts of the weekend. The organisers advertise ales, ciders and perries across the festival venues, with local bands on Friday and Saturday evenings, but the Wobble page doesn't promise a single menu or opening time for every venue. If you're relying on a particular meal or dietary option, ask the venue itself. There's water at the finish, too, so you can enjoy the ride without touching a drop of alcohol or spending the evening at the festival.
Make a day of it nearby
If you're not riding, start at the Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre, housed in a converted chapel. Interactive maps tell the story of the town's growth as a spa destination, and recordings of residents' memories give the local history a personal touch. Younger visitors can have a go at the centre's Follow the Frog quiz. Check its current opening times; they needn't match the ride's.
The separate Heritage Trail gives you a choice of walks: a town loop of about a mile, which takes around 45 minutes, or a country walk of about two miles, taking around 90 minutes. Plaques and waymarks explain the places along the way. Pick up the map brochure first; it comes in Welsh and English, with dispensers outside the centre when it's closed. There's also a children's trail along the main route, with puzzles to solve. Go for the shorter loop if you want time for the exhibition too, rather than staging an endurance event of your own.
What to bring and wear
Choose your route for the kind of riding involved, not just the distance. The organisers say both options include technical sections, marked with easier alternatives. Before signing up for the longer ride, think about whether everyone in your group will be happy taking a bypass when there's one on offer. Agree how you'll regroup after a tricky section and listen to the briefing for the day's instructions. Taking the easier line is part of the event, not a failure to finish it properly.
Pack so your essentials are still usable after a muddy ride. A separate bag for dry clothes and anything you'll want afterwards makes the stop at the hall far more comfortable, and means you can handle a freshly cleaned bike without plastering everything in mud again. The official bike wash is welcome, but it won't clean your clothes or kit. Check the entry conditions for any required riding equipment, and look for last-minute route notices before you leave home, rather than assuming another sportive's kit list applies here.
