ROUND-UP GUIDE · 9 EVENTS
Most towns mark 5 November with a council fireworks display. A handful go much further: torchlit processions by bonfire societies in Sussex, flaming tar barrels carried on shoulders through a Devon town, giant illuminated carnival carts in Somerset and a celebrity effigy blown up in Kent.
Many of the biggest nights fall on or near 5 November, but several societies hold theirs on other Saturdays in the autumn, so it’s possible to see more than one. Crowds are huge, roads close early and trains are often limited — read each guide’s travel section before you book.
