ROUND-UP GUIDE · 39 EVENTS
Every country has its festivals. Britain has a man covered head to toe in burrs, a village that kicks a wooden keg across the fields for a hare pie, Vikings who burn their own longship in Shetland, and a world championship for persuading worms out of a Cheshire field. This is our pick of the strangest of the lot — the ones that are genuinely worth a journey.
They fall into a few happy families: fire (tar barrels, fireballs and burning galleys), mass ball games played through whole towns, ancient folk customs with straw bears and reindeer antlers, and the gloriously daft “world championships” that only exist in one British village. Some invite you to have a go; many belong to the locals and welcome you to watch. Every guide says which.
The list runs in date order, starting with whatever is next. Each event links to a full visitor guide with the next date (and how sure we are of it), where to stand, how to get there by train and where to stay nearby.
