World Gravy Wrestling Championships

Late summer, recently on the August bank holiday Monday

Fancy dress and entertainment matter as much as wrestling at the World Gravy Wrestling Championships. Contestants grapple in a pool of gravy while raising money for charity. The organiser moved its 2026 edition to Bacup Cricket Club; the next date and venue still need confirmation.

RESEARCH CHECKED

The venue matters

The organiser’s homepage lists Bacup Cricket Club, Lane Head Lane, OL13 9BT, for 31 August 2026. Older descriptions of another venue should not guide your next journey. Check the organiser again before setting a navigation destination, since a previous move does not guarantee that the new venue will be retained.

The story behind it

Compared with Britain's centuries-old customs, gravy wrestling is a newcomer, dreamed up in Lancashire in 2007. For many years its home was the Rose 'n' Bowl pub on Newchurch Road in Stacksteads, near Bacup, where wrestlers in fancy dress took turns to grapple for two minutes in a 16-foot pool of Lancashire gravy. The scoring is as much about showmanship as technique: judges reward entertainment, and when a bout is hard to call they ask the crowd. The pool is topped up as the day goes on, and between rounds competitors are hosed down. The event raises money for charity, and by 2026 it had grown so popular that it outgrew the pub, moving after nearly 20 years to Bacup Cricket Club.

Watching the competition

The 2026 visitor page describes spectator admission, stalls and food and drink, with the wrestling beginning after doors open. Its prices and times belong to that edition. Wait for next-event details before assuming you can buy admission at the gate or arrive just before the first bout.

Parking and the last part of the journey

For 2026 the organiser said there was no spectator parking at the cricket club and described special arrangements elsewhere in Bacup. Those permissions were event-specific. Do not assume a supermarket car park offers free parking for a future edition: check the new instructions and any registration requirements on the day.

Participating and access

A wrestler’s application is separate from a spectator ticket. Read the organiser’s participant information if you want to enter rather than simply watch. Step-free access, reserved viewing, accessible toilets and seating have not been verified here. Resolve those questions with the event before committing to a visit if they affect your plans.

Taking part

The wrestler page asks you to fill in an entry form and give accurate contact details for updates. It also asks accepted competitors to let the organisers know promptly if they can no longer make it. That matters, because a knockout event depends on the right people turning up, not a loose queue of volunteers. Before splashing out on an elaborate costume, make sure your entry has been accepted and get the current reporting instructions. Parts of the page still carry the former venue's name, so check its details against the new edition rather than following one paragraph on its own. Ask what costume rules, changing arrangements and kit instructions apply now. Keep your confirmation with your travel details, and tell the organisers early if your plans change. A spectator ticket and a wrestler's accepted place are two separate things, even when both are sold through the same event listing.

Accessibility and families

East Lancashire Hospice's 2026 listing named the organisers as the Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company and Bacup Cricket Club, and explained the difference between the registration fee and optional extra sponsorship. So if you're entering, sort a few things out before sharing a fundraising page: the current instructions, who the money is for and the approved way to collect it. The old page says its contender list was full, which shows why an earlier call for entrants doesn't mean places are available. Spectators should check which admission offer applies to the new event before buying. Budget for food and stalls as well as entry, rather than expecting everything to be included. The comedy of the wrestling is the whole point, and a little clarity over booking and fundraising frees participants to concentrate on being entertaining when the moment comes.

Make a day of it nearby

The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery and the East Lancashire Railway are two ways to stretch the trip beyond Bacup. The Whitaker mixes museum collections with contemporary exhibitions and a café, so look at what's on if an indoor cultural visit appeals. The railway runs heritage steam and diesel journeys and publishes its own timetable, stations and tickets. Pick a definite attraction for another part of your stay, and don't expect a heritage train to double as transport to the cricket club; the competition venue needs its own final connection. Plan a gallery visit around the exhibition you want to see, and a railway outing around the actual trains running on your date. Give either one enough time to be enjoyed for its own sake, and keep wrestling admission and attraction tickets separate when you tot up the weekend's cost.

What to bring and wear

The wrestler information tells participants to bring towels and a change of clothes, and describes washing facilities. Check those arrangements for the next venue and edition, then work out how you'll keep wet clothing contained on the way home. A separate bag, clean shoes and dry layers are worth sorting before you leave your accommodation. A wash-down won't necessarily leave every bit of your costume and luggage fit for a restaurant, a train or a car seat straight away. Ask where supporters can meet you once you've changed, rather than arranging a pick-up beside the active pit. Spectators should keep their belongings out of the working area and give competitors room to get out between bouts. If you need accessible changing or washing facilities, get a specific answer from the organisers before accepting a place.

Questions people ask

Is filling in an old entry form a guaranteed place?

No. Check acceptance and the current instructions with the organisers.

Must an accepted wrestler report a cancellation?

Yes. The organisers ask you to tell them promptly so your place can go to someone else.

Are registration and sponsorship the same payment?

No. The hospice's 2026 listing separated the registration fee from optional extra sponsorship. Check again.

What should a competitor bring afterwards?

Towels and a change of clothes. Check the current washing facilities and pack for wet kit.

Can a heritage train be assumed to reach the venue?

No. The East Lancashire Railway is a separate attraction; arrange your own final connection to the competition venue.
