A FIELD GUIDE TO BRITAIN’S STRANGE & WONDERFUL DAYS OUT 145 EVENTS · ENGLAND · SCOTLAND · WALES · NORTHERN IRELAND

ROUND-UP GUIDE · 10 EVENTS

Mass ball games of Britain.

Football turns into something else entirely when the pitch is a town. Ashbourne has Up’ards and Down’ards, Kirkwall has Uppies and Doonies, and Hallaton’s contest sends small wooden barrels across the countryside. St Columb and St Ives both keep silver-ball customs, with very different days around them.

Pick your game by how you'd like to watch, then read the local rules. A street scrum isn't an invitation to wade in, and a family-friendly label doesn't make the heart of the action a place for children. Give players and residents room, keep an escape route in mind and follow the stewards, not the ball, into tight spots.
