BY MONTH
June makes a strong case for being the month of wonderfully unnecessary sport. Man v Horse changes the opposition, the Cotswold Olimpicks gathers its established games, and the World Worm Charming Championships focuses everyone on coaxing creatures out of the ground. These are very different challenges, even if they share a slot in the summer calendar. Read enough of each guide to decide whether you're drawn to technique, a racing course or a whole afternoon's atmosphere.
Knaresborough’s Bed Race adds teamwork and a distinctive vehicle, while custard pies, egg throwing and nettle eating offer other ways to compete. Some make more sense to watch than to tackle on a whim. Check the current entry rules before deciding to have a go, including teams, age groups and any kit requirements. A world-title name doesn't mean you can sign up on the day, and spectating is a perfectly complete way to enjoy the occasion.
The Common Ridings at Hawick and Selkirk, along with Lanimer Day, bring a different kind of ceremony and local pride to the month. They deserve reading in their own right, not treating as background entertainment between odd races. Pick the part of the programme that interests you and check where visitors are welcome. Joining a ride, watching a procession and attending a separate event are different decisions, even within the same celebration.
Use the map to pick a realistic summer outing, then turn to the current programme for the practical detail. These events vary in scale, setting and how much time they ask of you. Confirm the edition and any admission or entry before building the rest of the day around it. If your group has mixed interests, a wider festival may suit better than a single contest. You don't have to carry, charm, throw or swallow anything to come away with a memorable June afternoon.
